Shutdown Risk Triggers

Manufactured spending (especially for non-Soma spend), high cumulative credit limit across all Synchrony accounts, excessive recent credit applications, prolonged account inactivity, missed payments, or abuse of promotional financing offers.

Cliff Effect Rules

Synchrony does not typically enforce strict 'card family' rules like some other major issuers. However, approval for the Soma Mastercard may be contingent on a stronger credit profile. Applicants not approved for the Mastercard version might be offered the basic Soma store credit card instead. Holding one version does not necessarily preclude approval for the other, but total credit limits across all Soma-branded cards (if multiple tiers existed) would be considered in credit decisions.

Additional Issuer Rules

Eligibility for the Soma Mastercard from Synchrony requires applicants to be 18 years or older (19 in Alabama and Nebraska), possess a valid U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN), and have a U.S. mailing address. Approval is subject to creditworthiness, with Synchrony evaluating a range of credit profiles from fair to excellent, depending on the specific card tier and applicant's overall credit history. New cardholders typically receive a one-time discount on their first Soma purchase (e.g., 20% off) upon account opening. For the Mastercard version, an additional spend bonus might be offered, such as a '$50 statement credit after spending $500 outside of Soma within the first 90 days.' Synchrony evaluates recent credit inquiries and total credit extended across all existing Synchrony accounts. While multiple Synchrony accounts are possible, approval for new cards can be impacted by existing high credit limits or a high number of recent applications.
